No, I am not obsessed with the down trodden and the poor in this country. So, if my previous post was about the 'bais' and this about the beggars, that doesn't mean I have developed some sort of liking towards the backward class. It is just that I am getting to observe some newer sides of the society.
When as a child the first time I would have seen a beggar, the first impression would have been less of annoyance or pity, but more of curiosity, 'Why doesn't he earn it on his own instead of asking for it?' Surprisingly, that's a question for which even today I am finding an answer. Although the beggar community constantly keeps on trying to give me reasons, like I am blind, lame, old etc, but then they are hardly reasons. I have seen disabled people working, selling stuff in trains, polishing shoes or any other small business. So although the reasons might be genuine in some cases; but in a vast majority, they are just fraud marketing.
So let’s face it, begging is a profession. The purchases in this segment are impulse based. Somewhat the same as you spend your money on an alpenliebe or hajmola candy. You have never planned it before hand, it takes a fraction of a second to make a purchasing decision and the satisfaction just lasts for a minute or two and then it’s all forgotten. Now, coming back to my first memory of beggars, I remember my parents telling me to ignore them and that they are just a bunch of lazy people who don't want to work and earn money sitting. At that time it was difficult to digest the orders to ignore a poor man who was looking so pathetic, but with time I evolved and hardened my attitude towards them. But surprisingly they evolved too and changed their sales strategies. By the time I got comfortable with ignoring a lazy man sitting with a cup, they had poor children and women 'touching' you in railway station platforms or traffic light to get the money out of you in annoyance.
As an impulse, it might seem that for a business model that demands just one or two rupees from your pocket, spending that much is worth it to get rid of the sleazy stinking person standing in front of you. But then lately they too realized that this aggressive 'push' strategy was actually a mistake and that you can't fight with your customer's ego. So they changed that too. Now they are using 'pull' strategies, that is we don't want to beg, we are not beggars, we agree with you that it is a profession of lazy burdens on the planet, but what can we do, circumstances have led us to do this. But it is only momentary. The moment we get over it, we will be back in business, working hard to get back on our lives.
Now that sounds more convincing, but how are they doing it? On traffic light a woman approached me with a doctor's prescription saying she needed money for her husband's medicines. I would have given her money, and then I noticed that the date on the receipt was two months old. I asked her, why don't you update this, it would fetch you more money. She said nothing and turned away to the next vehicle! But then I realized it was a good strategy and she could have fooled anyone and many other beggars would be using the same at other traffic lights in other cities. But interestingly there is a clear cultural divide between beggars of metros and beggars of tier 2 cities. The Delhi beggars have evolved to such convincing ways, while beggars in my Bharuch are still relaxing on platforms with a cup in hand.
Whatever may be the case, every time a beggar approaches, I (and I am sure that must be the case with all of you) feel hard to convince myself to ignore that guy. On one hand I might be refusing a person really needing money, and on the other I might be encouraging such a profession. But then how many times have you heard a beggar dying of hunger. It is the hard working man who is too proud to beg that dies out of sickness or hunger. And what convinced me to this was a little incident a friend told me. She believed in 'you give a man a fish and you feed him for once and you teach him how to fish, you feed him forever theory' and hence when a girl approached her for money, gave her an address where she would get work . The girl asked, how much would this pay in a month.
"Two thousand", she replied.
"I make five thousand per month”, and went away.

If a beggar earns Rs. 5000 a month, that makes it Rs.166.66 per day. That's way above the Rs. 12 per day that we have set as the poverty line. In fact it's nearly 14 times the amount!
Since you were talking about the innovative ways these people come up with for begging, here are some of the things that I've seen.
1. Beggars, mostly kids, keeping touching your feet while demanding alms. They nearly perform the Surya namaskar over and over again to get money. Ofcourse they wouldn't know its the Surya Namaskar! I never fell for such tactics. This can be seen at Panvel station, just outside Bombay.
2. Beggars parents and kids alike blacked thier hands and faces with soot. They aren't really dirty. I saw some kids doing that again on Panvel bus stand. That family of beggars then to a bus to heir village, a few stops outside Panvel! Can you beat that? It must have cost them atleast 50 bucks for the whole family. They travel to and fro on that route everyday.
3. Small kids, perfectly capable of walking, act like toddlers. They older ones carry them on their waists while begging. Once I saw a bunch of kids begging like this. Some police constables arrived on the scene. The first kid to flee the place was the one siting on the waist, feigning her age. My friend asked me what went wrong becoz all the beggars had started running for their life. I told him it was the police they were afraid of. He was confused. I enlighenend him about the fact that begging is an IPC offence. He was stunned. I also told him that policemen extract bribes from beggars. He was furthermore confused. What could a policeman possibly ge from a beggar was his question. I told him that beggars roughly earn Rs.150 to Rs.200 per day so they can afford bribes. My friend looked liked he had never read newspapers and told me that he was learning about the begging mafia and their revenues for the first time. Talk about ignorance! I bet there must be many more people like him.
hehe....glad too see you wrote an entire post as a comment to this. :)
But cool observations. You are in fact very right about begging mafias. Once I saw this beggar who was begging and showing people that he was handicapped. But then I saw him comfortably crossing the railway line on both his feet when he saw an approaching train. :P
And thats the reason why I chose such a topic. Now what can I do if some people feel it is not typical ac. :D
If some wants a typical AC, ask them to visit a electronics showroom!
As for writing a post, this are the instances tha stand out in my memory. It's good to talk about these things, especially after Slumdog Milionaire took the Indian Begging Mafia all over the world.
There are lazy beggars and then there are those who are forced into it. I get a gut-wrenching feeling when I see amputees begging. I was horrified when my dad, an orthopaedic surgeon himself, told that once a bunch of orthopaedic surgeons had been arrested for amputating children and that they were working for begging mafias. Whatever happenend to the Hippocratus Oath?
or if they want typical AC, they can grip a live wire!!
hehe sorry fawkes (haldi)... just kidding.
Nowhere in comparison to The 'Bai' Blog! Not as great ideas and insights here..
why are you comparing my posts yaar... they two are completely different.
The bai blog was meant to be funny and exploring while the beggar blog was a serious blog and was more experimental. Secondly, we dont observe beggars and we have never given thought about them. Rarely have they been highlighted by media. But Baees have been a part of our lives and humor (from 'dekh bhai dekh' to 'TAHM' all have maids playing dominant comic roles) and hence it was easier to write about them.
As for beggars, it becomes difficult.
Neway... nice to know about this although.
What is TAHM? Talking about 'Bais' in our humour, even Channel [V] programmes are brought to you 'bai' some company, and not brought to you 'by' some company!
TAHM is 'two and half men' ... a sitcom we people watch to get out of our boring lives :P.. somewhat like FRIENDS and scrubs.
Cant believe you watch channel V but not star world!
I stopped watching Star World and Chanel [V] a long time ago. It is mu Mom who is a fan of that 'Bai' of the [V] guys. She is especially fond of that line 'Itna paisa mein itnaich milenga'! Anyway, I prefer programs on TV5 Monde Asie these days.
Are you hibernating or are exams eating into your time?
hehe.... no natalia, not exams abhi tohh. But busy with rambhai work. Would write soon waise...
Surely the beggar offers a service by providing the opportunity for a person to be charitable and thereby feel good about themselves.
I remember a woman in Mumbai with a small child sitting on a pavement in the same place for a week or so. I gave her a contribution each day which she acknowledged with a smile.
One day she was gone and I felt concerned, what had happened to her, was her baby alright, had it been taken ill, has she been arrested and perhaps beaten.
Some time later at Delhi Railway Station I saw her getting off a train, she looked well and so did her baby and I was pleased.
My contributions had provided the opportunity for her to move on - the cost to me was minimal but the opportunity it provided her and her child was, it seemed, a positive one.
Nice posting.
Yes you are right Juhi. Nataliya is going out of the discussion.

No need of this much analysis to drop one or two coins.
If you think they are the most hard working people than you, some of them are pushed to beggary as the last hope to live.
Some of them don't know anything else to do.
They are not as cunning and as cruel as the rest of communities like this ,to do any thing to live.
Though you are not putting anything, its ok.
But dont spoil others also
Some people are fortunate and some are not. Some get to the top, while some fall to the ground and doesn't know how to pick themselves up again.
Still some use begging to con others and some are honest.
Getting out of a tough spot is a choice, no one else will make that choice for you.
And we can't make those choices for the ones who beg.
